Sign of the Month: Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

If you think the Virgo nature is to be prudish, think again. Virgins are known to discriminate with the best when it comes to personal desire, and there’s nothing wrong with knowing what you want and passionately focusing your energy until you get it.

The reason you’re so critical is because of your practical analytical skills, pinpointing and recognizing red alerts in people and situations quickly and with precision. While you don’t rely on creativity for answers, you’re sharp thinkers — and for you, that’s certainly enough!

Your motto could be “Perfect is almost good enough.” A perfectionist at heart, you can be overly-fussy and extremely picky. This can lead to extreme limitations on relationships and situations before they even take place, which, in turn, limits the potential in life. If you can learn to be selectively less critical, you’ll enjoy yourself much more.

Virgo rules our mental and critical faculties. Within this personality is something of the craftsman in their being. With their eye for detail and the development of a routine, it helps to hone these skills into an intelligent synthesis. Popularly known as the sign of service, those with Virgo prominent need to affirm their sense of identity through their usefulness in society. One of Virgo’s skills is deciding what is useful and productive and what serves no purpose. The mantra of this Mercury ruled sign is drawn from their habitual way of life and that is to practice it, perfect it, and repeat it.

Virgo has the gift of discrimination, selection, analysis and prioritizing, systematically studying and categorizing virtually everything. Mercury signs process information, figure things out, obsess, analyze, worry, articulate, and are incessantly moving from  thought to thought.

Virgo needs to refine and purify every last detail. Virgo needs to sort, sift, and surrender. Virgo needs to bring things together. Virgo needs to maximize the minimal. Virgo needs a toothbrush, the comb, and the floss. Virgo needs to be the humble healer and the sweetest servant. Virgo needs to be the helper and the one who shows the way. Virgo needs the recipe, the map and the directions.

To be a good Virgo, they require two things: analysis and synthesis. Sometimes, though, Virgo is so obsessed with details that it often misses the larger picture. Like a jigsaw puzzle, everything has to “fit.” Yet, Virgo likes to use its critiquing efforts to bring organization to chaos. Virgo will adapt to the environment and also tries to improve it. The individual harvests energy for the future, pruning away, focusing on a specific aim. The acquisition of knowledge and skills ensures that time is not wasted. Virgo also possesses strong instincts about what is healthy and unhealthy. According to Isabel Hickey, Virgo is the last of the personal signs and is the threshold of the birth of the inner man. The personality developed from Aries to Virgo; the soul developed from Virgo to Pisces.

The Virgo element is Earth
Earth signs are naturally practical. In this lifetime we are bound to Earth — there is no escaping the reality around us The earth is about as real as it gets; it can be felt, weighed and it has substance. Accordingly, the Earth signs base their life on what is real, not what is imagined. Sensation is valued over thoughts or feelings. Earth signs live with their feet on the ground, so others seek their advice because of their basic sensibility. For Earth signs, seeing is believing.

The Earth of Virgo is a changeable Earth, light to the touch. It’s about practical analysis — using mental tools to discern the best use for what is around us.

Horoscope house: 6th
The 6th house is about the regular performance of work-related tasks. This isn’t necessarily about career — it’s about the job you have that buys the bread for the table. This sector is also where we look to find out about health and healing, for it’s not only work routine, but also our daily habits and hygiene.

Virgo’s key planet: Mercury
Mercury, the Messenger of the Gods, moves around the Sun faster than any other planet. He symbolizes our thoughts — not only how we think, but how we communicate. In fact, Mercury is in charge of all language. Mercury is our active and rational mind. It is not only “just the facts,” but also what we do with them. As the key planet of Virgo, Mercury is about intellectual discrimination. It’s the binary function of the neurons in our brain; they either fire on impulse or they don’t. Mercury here is about the basic “yes” or “no” decision that must be made for every piece of information that enters our consciousness.

Virgo in Love

The perfectionist in Virgo will settle for nothing less than spectacular — this goes the same for relationships, too. While they take a little longer to warm up than most other signs, once a Virgo is committed, he or she is easy to trust and will provide a great amount of mental stimulation and intellect for their partner to enjoy.

It may be more difficult for someone less pragmatic to handle the “refined” nature of a Virgo, because that need for refinement can sometimes err on the side of presumptuous and/or demanding. However, the Virgo loyalty is unmatched, and they have no problem standing on their own when single and unattached, too … which is sexy all in itself.

It is important to note that a Virgo is, deep down, very vulnerable and can be quite insecure, even if this doesn’t show on the surface. It takes time, effort and patience to come to understand Virgo’s hidden insecurities, and their partners sometime have to act as cheerleaders for support and self-esteem when their Virgo gets too critical on themselves or the choices they’ve made. However, they are a very loving — and sensual — sign.
