Dear little me, this is our future

Hello little me,

I wanted to start by telling you that the world isn’t going to be the way you expected it in a few years. There are certain dangers and things that you will have to understand now before it’s too late.

People are going to try to make you stray and get you involved in situations that will prove very harmful to you; be wary of your surroundings starting now. There are people seeking to harm you for no reason and they will sometimes but maybe you’ll be able to avoid some of them if you start protecting yourself.

You’re still too naïve to see, I don’t blame you, but we can’t afford that anymore. As terrifying as it may sound – trust me. You’ll be thankful that I got to tell you this beforehand.

The time you’ll be living in when you reach the age I am now is going to be very scary, so much in fact, that you will never develop the habit of listening to the news. That’s okay though, you’re going to inform yourself in different ways, but this is always going to put you in a small position of the minority. You will see, hear and know things that people have done that will leave you stunned but the good thing is that you will manage to keep yourself quite safe from them.

I wish that you could keep your innocence longer, but I’m afraid that you won’t be able to. Things are about to change for you and you’ll never get to feel the way you do now again. Promise me something though, when you grow up try to at least not be so serious all the time. It’s going to be hard, I know, but try to have fun every once in a while. Keeping a part of your childlike excitement is what’s going to carry you through the tough times, so hold on to that will you? Hold on to it tight.

Soon you’re going to start noticing things about the people around you. You’ll start to notice that they are not what they say they are and that not everyone that you call your friend is actually really looking out for you. There will come a time when you’ll be too scared to use the word ‘friend’. Even though it will feel like you are going to be alone, I’ll tell you this. You are going to find some amazing people that stick by you no matter what and will make all the hurt and betrayal from the friends you have now seem like nothing. So don’t worry your little head with them anymore, they are only temporary.

What I’m going to tell you next may upset you but you really need to know. You are going to lose people. People that mean the world to you and people that you love. Unfortunately, our blessing or curse is that we don’t get to deal with loss until we are much older but it will happen to us and it will affect us for a very long time. It happens to everyone, we won’t be any different, but there will be times when you will feel that there is no way up.

But you know what? Regardless of all the bad things and mishaps, you’ll have along the way you are going to turn out great. You are going to finish school with better grades than you expected, you are going to go to university and study something you love, you are going to have a job you enjoy and most importantly you are going to be really pleased with the person you turned out to be.

So don’t fret little me, things do seem pretty grim right now and I guarantee that things will in fact get even grimmer at times in the future but what I can guarantee is that you’ll make it out of each situation strong.

So be strong my little self for what’s to come and hold tight to who you are because it won’t matter whether other people believe it or not. What will matter is that you do and that you stay true to it.

Trust my words and believe me that things are going to be alright, and you’re going to be okay.
