A typical love scenario of life is that we meet someone, we fall in love, probably end up hurting because someone cares more than the other one, or circumstances make the two people take their separate ways and goin different directions. But somehow in the end, miraculously they end up together. Somehow the ‘universe’ conspires to brings them back together. There is a big scene and they end up kissing and hugging in the middle of the street. This is the plot of every romantic comedy or the plot of life as we hope it will be.

Sometimes I am just in the mood to watch a rom com because I want to get that taste of a genuine smile, some laughs and true love. Or maybe deep down inside I am just a hopeless romantic, but I think there is a bigger reason to why so many people love these movies. When we might not feel at our best we just need a bit of light, a tiny touch of hope to make our lives better even for like 2 hours, for the whole duration of the movie and maybe a bit more afterwards when your mind will still be traveling into the plot. I’m certain that we all love a happy ending and maybe that’s why we love watching rom coms. When things aren’t going perfectly in our lives we all like to dream for a better future. A happily ever after. After all, we all deserve our happily ever after, and this kind of movies make us believe that they can actually happen and we can actually be a part of it.

Romantic comedies also make us consider what we deserve in a relationship. Nowadays, people usually hook up for a while before they even call it dating and that might not be the ideal for both of the people involved in this. Sometimes it’s  hard to figure out the thoughts of the person you want to be with, and you end up being treated badly. Watching this kind of films, might make you realise that there are still people out there who deserve you and that will be there for you not only for your body, not only for meaningless sex, but for your lovely self, your amazing personality, your very interesting character, your stunning smile.

Rom coms are like fairy tales for the grownups, but are even more reachable. Of course, you wouldn’t expect in real life someone like Colin Firth and Hugh Grant to actually fight for you, my fellow Bridget, but maybe you could just take the risk and talk to that guy in the office or at the bar or at the gym or at the train next to you, who might seem way out of your league but believe me, you never know what it’s going to happen. That’s quite the opposite between real life and a romantic comedy: rom coms are predictable, life is not. So the greatest thing we can do is just to take the positive aspect of the rom com and apply it in our everyday routines: let’s keep the hope for the future and hope in true love.
